The role of a Senior GIS Specialist

You will be pivotal in implementing and maintaining Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which are essential to our organisation. You will lead specialised tasks in GIS and asset data management, technical support, and application development while collaborating closely with GIS analysts, stakeholders, and end-users to leverage GIS technologies effectively.

You will manage geospatial and asset data acquisition, compilation, and maintenance, ensuring data quality and integrity while automating GIS processes using Python and FME. Technical support will be key, providing guidance on software usage and configuration and conducting training sessions to enhance users’ GIS proficiency.

Collaboration with cross-functional teams to integrate GIS solutions into business processes, project management to oversee GIS projects from planning to delivery, and proactive involvement in GIS standards development and innovation will define your role.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the implementation and maintenance of GIS, ensuring data quality and integrity
  • Execute asset data source analysis, cleansing and migration project or program
  • Conduct advanced spatial analysis and modelling to address complex geographical challenges and generate actionable insights
  • Develop and automate GIS tools, scripts, and workflows to enhance operational efficiency and productivity
  • Develop and maintain mobile GIS solutions (e.g. Field Maps and Survey123).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate GIS solutions into business processes and decision-making workflows.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for GIS users, ensuring optimal performance and utilisation of GIS infrastructure
  • Manage GIS projects from planning through to delivery, coordinating project teams and communicating progress to stakeholders
  • Lead specific Geospatial projects, including collecting and facilitating the collection of datasets, data governance, processing and manipulation of data, and the complex visualisation of the products through apps, dashboards and story maps.
  • Stay updated on advancements in GIS technology and recommend innovative approaches that align with business needs.

About you

With a tertiary qualification in GIS, IT, or a related field and 5-7 years of specialised experience in the utility sector, passionate about infrastructure asset data management (electricity network asset preferable), ESRI technologies and FME, you bring extensive expertise to the Senior GIS Specialist role at Waipā Networks.

Your background includes significant experience in data management, GIS analysis visualisation, web applications and field apps, showcasing your proficiency in leveraging spatial data for strategic decision-making.

You’ll possess a proven track record in leading GIS implementation, data cleansing and migration projects and providing technical leadership, underscoring your commitment to data quality and enhancing efficiency and innovation in asset and spatial data solutions. Your proactive approach and problem-solving abilities are complemented by strong interpersonal skills, enabling effective collaboration with teams and stakeholders alike.
