Supplying electricity to rural and coastal communities brings different challenges, including long lines, difficult terrain and exposure to weather and vegetation.

Investing in these parts of the network helps us manage those challenges, strengthen resilience and make sure the network continues to meet the needs of the communities it serves.

Kāwhia line deviation

We’re planning to move sections of the electricity line away from the riverbank where erosion is creating an increasing risk to the safety and security of the network. The work will include replacing some existing poles and installing new ones in safer locations.

The project is currently in the design phase, with work expected to take place in early 2027 when conditions are drier. We’ll continue working directly with affected landowners before designs are finalised and keep the wider community and other stakeholders informed as the project progresses.

If a planned outage is required as part of our work, affected customers will be notified by their electricity retailer in advance. We may provide additional information where there are wider community impacts or specific details customers need to be aware of.
