Waipā Networks backs Te Awa Light Night return

Waipā Networks is encouraging whānau to dust off their bikes, charge their lights and get ready for the return of Te Awa River Ride’s popular Light Night event on Saturday, 12 September.

Originally scheduled earlier this winter, the much-loved community event was postponed due to bad weather. The event has now been rescheduled to bring the Te Awa River Ride trail to life with lights, colour and creativity, as thousands of people walk, cycle, scoot and roll along the pathway after dark.

Te Awa River Ride Trail Manager Sarah Ulmer says the Te Awa River Ride Trust loves putting events like this on. “We love seeing Te Awa come alive in a different way at our Light Nights – people getting together, moving outdoors and having a blast – that’s what Te Awa is all about!”

As an ongoing supporter of Light Night, we are proud to once again back an event that encourages people of all ages to get active, connect with one another and enjoy a unique experience in their own backyard.

Chief executive Damien Whiffen says Light Night has become a highlight on the community calendar, and it’s wonderful that we can support the event once again.

He says that, having recently moved into the area, he’s looking forward to taking part.

“I hear grandparents, parents and tamariki love to get involved in this event, decorating themselves and their bikes with lights and making an evening of it. It sounds like a lot of fun and one of those events that genuinely brings people together,” says Whiffen.

The free community event begins at the Gaslight Theatre precinct, with participants encouraged to light up their bikes, scooters, prams and even themselves before heading along the trail. Along the way, they’ll encounter illuminated installations, entertainment and plenty of opportunities to stop, explore and enjoy the atmosphere.

Whiffen says that supporting events like Light Night reflects our commitment to giving back to the communities it serves and to supporting wellbeing.

“As a customer-owned organisation, we’re passionate about supporting activities and community initiatives that strengthen connection and help people make the most of the places and facilities we have here in Waipā.

“Te Awa River Ride is an incredible asset for our region, and the Light Night event gives people the chance to experience it in a completely different way. It’s fun, it’s accessible, and it creates memories for people of all ages.”
