New EV charger installed at Cambridge Pools

Visitors to Cambridge Pools can once again plug in and power up, thanks to a new electric vehicle charger that’s now ready for public use.

The new charger replaces the original unit installed in 2021 as part of an EV charging trial. Since then, public EV charging options across Cambridge have increased significantly, reflecting the growing number of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles on local roads.

While the original charger had reached the end of its operational life, Waipā Networks recognised the importance of maintaining charging infrastructure at the site and worked to deliver a replacement solution.

The installation also comes at a time when transport costs and fuel prices remain front of mind for many households, making access to a free public charging station a valuable option for local EV drivers and community organisations.

Chief Executive Damien Whiffen says the new charger ensures EV users can continue to charge their vehicles, free of charge, while making use of the pools and surrounding facilities.

“We’re pleased to have a replacement charger in place so local residents and visitors can continue to access convenient charging while they’re at the pools,” he said.

“Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are an increasingly important part of New Zealand’s transport mix. Reliable local charging options help give people confidence when choosing how they travel.”

The charger is now available for the public to use, ensuring EV and plug-in hybrid vehicle drivers can continue charging while visiting the pools and surrounding facilities.
