Customer Discounts

We’re 100% customer-owned by the Waipā Networks Trust and are proud to deliver benefits back to the communities we serve.


One of these benefits is the twice-yearly discount, which all local eligible customers receive on their electricity bills.

The discount amount is based on:

  • Your pricing plan
  • Your electricity usage
  • Your Installation Control Point (ICP).

For 2025/26, we intend to pay approximately $6.44 million, including GST, in total customer discounts. This includes $3.58 million already paid in October 2025.

Who gets the discount?

You qualify for a discount if your property was physically connected to our electricity network and you were registered with an electricity retailer as of 23 April 2026Discounts are applied per ICP (Installation Control Point), not per individual person.

How is the discount calculated?

Your discount depends on: 

  • Your price plan 
  • How much electricity is used at your property during the calculation period 
  • Your fixed-lines charges. 

 If you have questions about your pricing plan or lines charges, please contact your electricity retailer directly. 

Why is my discount more (or less) compared to last time?

The total discounts Waipā Networks pays can vary from year to year, since we set the total discount amount annually, taking into account changes in lines revenue and costs we expect for the year ahead. 

 Your individual discount may also change if: 

  • Your electricity usage has increased or decreased 
  • Your pricing plan has changed 
  • You were connected for only part of the qualifying period. 
I’ve recently moved into my property. How does this affect my discount?

Discounts are calculated based on electricity usage at the property (ICP) during the qualifying period. If you recently moved in, your discount may reflect electricity usage before you occupied the property (e.g., by a previous tenant or tenants). We don’t hold detailed customer usage records – your retailer manages billing and usage information. 

I just left the area - will I get a discount?

Discounts are credited to retailer accounts on 23 April 2026 (or shortly after, depending on your retailer’s billing cycle). If you were responsible for the electricity account on the day the discount was appliedthis should show on your bill. If you’re unsure, please contact your local electricity retailer.  

When will I get my discount?

While discounts are credited to your electricity retailer on 23 April 2026, it may take a few days to appear on your power bill, depending on your billing cycle. 

What wording will appear on my bill?

Waipā Networks Discount” or a similar description will appear on your power account. 

Do I need to do anything?

No. If you’re connected to our network and billed through a local electricity retailer, the discount is automatically credited to your account.
