Waipā Networks, The Lines Company set to host New Zealand’s best electrical crews

The country’s top cable Jointers and line mechanics will gather in Te Awamutu at the end of October to put their skills and knowledge to the test at the Connexis Annual Connection competition.

The electrical supply industry gathers each year to celebrate the exceptional talent and dedication of New Zealand’s overhead and underground crews and highlights the many career opportunities in an industry set to see rapid growth over the next two decades.

Waipā Networks and The Lines Company are sponsors and co-hosts of this year’s three-day event, which will be held at Castleton Park from 22 to 24 October.

Waipā Networks’ General Manager Delivery, Tom Bromfield, said the demand for electricity is estimated to double by 2050, and the industry urgently needs to focus on attracting, retaining and growing its workforce.

“This competition is an exciting platform to show young people first-hand the skills, comradery and success that they could have with this career path,” he said.

Electricity Networks Aotearoa’s briefing to incoming energy minister Hon Simeon Brown said electricity distribution companies employ over 10,000 people nationwide annually. However, with the growing energy demand, the industry will suffer a severe shortfall if we don’t act now.

To meet the shortfall, at least two people need to be recruited daily across New Zealand. Projected growth in Waipā will require an even greater focus on training and recruitment in the coming years.

“Our sector offers fantastic opportunities, and the event demonstrates the mahi and skills that our crews use daily. The reality is Kiwis get to turn their lights on and don’t have to think about what’s happening in the background.”

The school’s programme will run over the first day of the competition to inspire younger people. Students from the broader Waikato region will have the opportunity to learn more about a career in the industry. They will also be able to meet and chat with people working in the industry and watch the teams compete.

The event features the competition, including 17 teams from electricity distribution companies across the country, a supplier expo, an awards dinner and the schools programme.

The competition is not open to the public, but friends, whānau and other supporters can attend, and schools and stakeholder groups are hosted on an invitation basis.
