Waipā Networks has announced the appointment of Damien Whiffen as its new Chief Executive, effective 20 April 2026.

Waipā Networks Board Chair Jonathan Kay says Whiffen brings deep technical expertise, proven leadership and a strong commitment to community-focused network management.

“Damien’s a highly respected leader in the energy sector with enormous experience across electricity distribution, asset management and operations,” says Kay.

“He brings a strong focus on safety, reliability and long-term resilience, along with a genuine commitment to the communities our network serves here in Waipā. We’re delighted to welcome him to Waipā Networks whānau.”

Damien Whiffen joins Waipā Networks from Mainpower, where he most recently served as Chief Assets and Operations Officer following his role as Acting Chief Executive.

His previous leadership roles include senior positions at Essential Energy in Australia, Orion, and Alpine Energy.

A Chartered Professional Engineer, Whiffen has strong experience leading large operational teams and delivering strategic investment programmes that enhance service reliability, safety and sustainability. He has built strong relationships with customers, stakeholders and communities during that time, which Kay says will be invaluable in Waipā.

“I’m excited and proud to be taking on the role of Chief Executive at Waipā Networks,” says Damien Whiffen.

“Waipā Networks has a strong legacy of serving its community and, at a time of population growth, electrification and evolving energy needs, the role the network plays has never been more important.”

Damien says his immediate focus will be on continuing to deliver safe, reliable and affordable electricity for customers, while ensuring the network is well positioned to support future growth.

“Waipā is one of the most vibrant and rapidly developing regions in the country, and my family and I are really looking forward to making the move and becoming part of the community we serve,” he says.

“There’s a significant opportunity ahead to strengthen network resilience, deliver critical infrastructure and support sustainable development across the region. I’m looking forward to working with our communities, our customers and our partners to ensure reliable electricity remains the backbone of a thriving, connected Waipā, now and into the future.”

Kay says Damien’s appointment reflects the Board’s focus on ensuring Waipā Networks is well prepared for the changing energy landscape.

“Damien’s leadership, technical capability and values align strongly with Waipā Networks’ purpose. He’s well-placed to lead the organisation as we invest in growth and support our communities through the transition to a new energy future.”

Kay also acknowledged the contribution of Tom Bromfield, who has been serving as Acting Chief Executive since December.

“I would like to sincerely thank Tom for his leadership and stewardship of the organisation during this transition period since Sean Horgan’s departure. His commitment and steady guidance have ensured Waipā Networks has continued to perform strongly.”
